Franschhoek
OPEN: WEEK SAT SUN HOL
WINE ROUTE:
Franschhoek
The Boschendal vineyards cover an area of 254 hectares. Geographically they extend for six kilometers along the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountain towards the Dwarsriver, to the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. The annual rainfall varies between 1000 - 1250mm of which most is in the period June to September.
Boschendal's size and position allow for the successful growth of a number of grape varieties, and great care is taken to find the most appropriate location for each varietal planting. A significant portion of the estate is planted with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, a signature white varietal from Boschendal. Extensive new plantings of the noble red varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, have positioned Boschendal to become one of South Africa's top red wine producers.
Boschendal produces grapes, which are at optimum maturity at 22-24 °Balling. This variance in ripeness helps to distribute the peak period of the grape intake at the cellar, and also ensures that particular blocks can be selected by the viticulturist and wine-makers to produce specific styles.
The range of altitudes and slopes combined with the pattern of the plantings give Boschendal a distinct advantage; the varying degrees of sugar and acidity that develop in the grapes enable the wine-makers to blend well-balanced wines.
The cool growing conditions in the Boschendal vineyards produce fine-bodied wines yet filled with ripe fruit flavors. Each wine is intrinsically different yet each portrays the inherent characteristics of the Boschendal terroir.
