NEXT OPEN DAY for Nursery, Pre & Primary School on Sat 4 August from 10am to 1pm -
Join us for a talk on Montessori at 11am.

Newberry House Montessori School relocated to the Lourensford Estate at the beginning of 2010 and also celebrated its 10th anniversary that year, having started with just a few children at the old AECI premises back in 2000. There are approximately 40 pre-schoolers and 60 primary school children; and with the Secondary School (Middle School) having started in 2011, it currently offers Grades 7 & 8 and will continue each year to grow as the children progress.

Montessori education has its origins in Italy, with the first school started in the slums of Rome, in 1907, by Dr Maria Montessori, the first woman to become a doctor in Italy at that time.

Montessori education has become renowned for offering carefully prepared environments to suit the needs of particular age groups of children.

The new Nursery environment is small and intimate and we look forward to welcoming young toddlers from 1 to 3.

The Pre-school environment has hands-on, concrete materials, such as the sandpaper letters and movable alphabet, for reading and writing; as well as bead chains and 3 dimensional solids, for absorption of mathematical concepts. There is an emphasis on practical life and sensorial experiences.

The Primary classroom appeals to the children's need to develop their powers of reasoning, and also provides materials which stimulate the imagination. Children are also encouraged to get involved with charitable work in society, as they have an acute sense of social justice at this age. .

The Middle school environment is a practical, hands-on environment where the children are exposed to many facets of life. They are also very active - running their own vocations/businesses for themselves and for the school; eg gardening, marketing, cooking and more. The school is implementing the Cambridge system at this level as it is world-renowned and flexible which suits the needs of the children.

The Lourensford farm is the ideal environment for all age groups. The children, parents and staff are very aware of their privileged position and are geared to take advantage of all the learning opportunities provided by this environment. The children have already been on a fynbos tour on the farm, attended a wine-making workshop, seen how fruit is distributed from the packing sheds and had instruction about weather patterns from Lourensford's own weather station, which helps to determine when crops should be sprayed.

The Montessori approach is about following the child and guiding them to stimulate their interests and to work with them to become independent, self-motivated, interested, interesting and helpful members of society.

The Middle School relocated in April 2012 to premises just behind the Primary School, and the children now run an Eco-Breeze Cafe & Co-Op there every Friday from 12 to 2pm.  Do pop in for a coffee or lunch or a browse through the stalls.
