Orange River Cellars took its message of quality wines from a unique wine region to Europe in September and October, which included a presence at Cape Wine Europe, a showcase of South African wines held in Earls Court, London.
Over 100 of South Africa’s leading wineries presented their wines and the image of our industry to a discerning group of British media and trade representatives, with the public also having access to sectors of the event.

Marketing manager Koos Visser and Keimoes head wine-maker Chris Venter represented Orange River Cellars, giving the hundreds of visitors flocking to Cape Wine a taste of the Orange River’s finest red and white wines.

“We were really surprised by the interest shown in our wines,” said Visser. “The quality of the wines and our competitive prices are, as in South Africa, seen by the British as attractive options for both the consumers and trade. But today’s wine-buyer wants a story, and here the Orange River wine region has a story unique in the South African wine industry: vineyards in a true African wilderness, our region’s natural beauty and special climate, the wide open spaces and starry night skies…..visito rs to Cape Wine Europe were so taken up with our region that I had to remind Chris we were there to pour wine and not act as potential tour guides!”

Visser said that he was also surprised at the business opportunities in the British wine market, which has the reputation of being over-traded.

“There was real interest from buyers who always seem to have space on their shelves for a new wine with a ‘wow’ factor. All I can say of the British market is ‘watch this space’!”

The visit to Europe included time spent in Denmark with Michael Svejstrup Olesen, managing director of the Responsibly Beverage Company in Copenhagen which recently commissioned Orange River Cellars to produce a unique product aimed at fashion-conscious followers of Denmark’s lively night-club scene.

Called “Bubbles”, the product is Orange River Cellars’ carbonated sparkling wine packaged in a “white” bottle.

“The product is all the rage in Denmark at the moment,” says Koos, “the eye-catching pack aging makes it the in-thing to be seen with a bottle of Bubbles while you are taking in Copenhagen’s very active night-life. And trust me, of this there is a lot – the city does not seem to sleep, ever!”
