Mont Rochelle to take part in the 'Tops Gugulethu Wine Festival'
published on: 30 April 2012      source: Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards

Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards has confirmed its participation in the TOPS Gugulethu Wine Festival in Cape Town on 25 and 26 May 2012.
Taking place on the rooftop of the Gugulethu Mall, the boutique Franschhoek winery will be one of more than 250 exhibitors expected to take part in this second annual event, which was founded by the owners of Mzoli’s Place, the famous Gugulethu braai restaurant.

Darran Stone, winemaker and viticulturist at Mont Rochelle says the winery is excited about the opportunity to create brand awareness in the emerging black market, and sees it as an ‘investment’ wine show. ‘We believe this is an excellent opportunity to showcase our wines to this potential powerhouse of new wine drinkers. At the Soweto wine festival last year, there was keen interest in our wines, particularly in our flagship Miko range – which was also our top seller at the show. In terms of style, our wines are drier, more elegant and European in nature, and we found that the emerging wine drinking market was most appreciative and interested in this aspect, and eager to learn more about this classic style of winemaking.’

Mont Rochelle will be showcasing its full range of wines at the TOPS Gugulethu Wine Festival: Mont Rochelle Sauvignon Blanc 2011; Unwooded Chardonnay 2010; Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2008; Merlot 2006; Cabernet Sauvignon 2006; Syrah 2006; Artemis 2007 (red blend); and flagship Miko Chardonnay Sur Lie 2009.

Mont Rochelle’s flagship Miko range is named in honour of the late owner of Mont Rochelle, Miko Rwayitare, who rated the barrel fermented Chardonnay among his most favourite wines.

Against the backdrop of Franschhoek’s Klein Dassenberg Mountains, Mont Rochelle is a boutique winery, producing only small volumes, on average 6 000 bottles per wine, with total production of between 60 000 and 70 000 bottles of wine from 100 tons of grapes every year. Approximately 60% is sold in South Africa at specialist wine shops and restaurants, and the balance exported to the UK, USA, Ireland, Belgium, Russia, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan.
