From a distance, the irresistible flavour of fresh, farm-baked bread will lure visitors to this country-style shop. The selection includes a so-called Ouma's Bread, a Shiraz Loaf, Potato, Barley and Thyme Loaf, Fruited Rye and even a pot bread with sheep's fat. A gluten-free alternative is also on offer. Shoppers are reminded that not the full selection will be available daily.

The shop also offers an array of take-home reminders of La Motte. These include a range of art products designed and created especially for this shop. As far as possible, these items are made from South African raw material, or manufactured locally. Works by South African artists, such as Pierneef, were used as motifs. Among the artists are three of South Africa's most promising young ceramic and porcelain potters. Items with a close La Motte "connection" include Hanneli Rupert CD's, a fabric print of an original Deed of Sale of La Motte and botanical sketches of flower species grown on the farm.

Stationery and cards printed in the old-fashioned letter press style feature exceptionally beautiful prints of Pierneef's work. Printing was done by a small family business still in possession of antique letter presses. Functional woodwork items include bread boards and salt cellars made from recyclable barrels. The list continues, with hand-carved bread knives, art books, aprons and bio-degradable plant containers. In season, disas and lavendine, grown on the farm, can be purchased. On the stoep or in the garden, visitors can relax, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee with home-baked delights.

This shop offers the perfect round-up of a visit to La Motte.
