in the vineyard : Up until this vintage we have only used Tinta Barocca grapes for our port. This 2001 vintage we have used Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional grapes - moving closer towards the Portuguese style of ports, which are usually a blend of grapes rather than only one cultivar.

In this vintage, the blend of grapes are from three different blocks. About a third of the blend are grapes from an old block of Tinta Barocca grapes - 27 years. The other third are grapes from a newly planted block of Tinta Barocca and the final third are from a very promising young block of Touriqa Nacional.

about the harvest: Harvesting takes place when the grapes are fully ripe and loaded with flavours.

in the cellar : All the grapes are crushed together into traditional open fermentors (kuipe). We allow the must to start fermenting naturally (no yeast inoculation) and the cap is continuously punched down every four hours during fermentation for maximum colour and flavour extraction. When the desired amount of sugar has been fermented into alcohol the grapes are pressed and fortified with 80 vol % brandy spirits and then aged in old 225 litre French Barrels for 18 months.
