La Motte Hanneli R 2007
The combination of a good vintage and 48 months of wood maturation has produced a wine with exceptional depth, complexity and personality. The intensely distinctive nose shows rose petal perfume with black berry and mulberry fruit, as well as cinnamon and black pepper spice. On the palate there are powdery tannins, surrounded by a fleshy fullness and lingering minerally freshness.

This new wine from La Motte reveals black berry fruit integrated with liquorice spice and roasted red pepper on the nose. The palate impresses with a full body, covered with aniseed and cumin spice. A very rewarding combination of varieties and a true South African example pf this well-known combination.

Cellarmaster's Impressions
Due to a secondary dry season, the grapes were picked early, resulting in a low alcohol content. Although not in a full-ripe style, the wine is fruity, with gooseberry, passion fruit and ripe apple showing intensely and with hints of dry wild grass in the background. The palate has a juicy round entry with a fresh mineral presence.

The wine shows an intense spicy nose of aniseed, clove and black pepper surrounded by black cherry and blue berry fruit. Some liquorice and toffee notes are present. The palate is full-bodied, chewy and juicy, with integrated wood tannin that creates a pleasant clean, dry finish.

Elgin grapes performed well this year and a large portion went into this wine. The nose shows strong gooseberry character backed up by apple, pineapple, passion fruit and wild grass nuances. In spite of a heat wave in some areas shortly before harvest-time, the wine has high natural acid, leaving a fresh, clean after-taste following a beautifully silky, round palate.

The wine has a real fruit basket nose including pineapple and nectarine framed in a straw and cashew nuts background. Hints of marmalade and citrus blossoms make it even more complex. A fairly low alcohol and firm acid should already tell you that the grapes were harvested with a fresh, structured wine in mind – a wine which is dominating the oak in which it matured for 12 months.

When bottled, the wine had a straw-yellow colour. As in the case of earlier vintages, the wine shows distinctive yellow fruit on the nose, but also a rich depth of cashew nut, straw and nutmeg. The palate is refreshing and ends in a pineapple and sweet melon after-taste.

La Motte Millennium 2010
Equal amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc dominate, to create the Bordeaux profile for which this wine is known. For the first time, though, Shiraz was added for more complexity and it is probably responsible for the hint of aniseed. The wine is intense on the nose, with cherry and mulberry fruit together with cinnamon spice. Wood maturation has enhanced a toffee and caramel presence. Very smooth and juicy on the palate.

An excellent season yielded a wine with depth and complexity. After 25 months on the lees, secondary flavours such as dough and earthy flavours are more prominent than the primary fruit flavours. Although the Chardonnay is dominant, the wine has a light salmon colour with a very fine bubbling.

Good colour and tight, concentrated tannins from the Walker Bay area are combined with spicy, intensely flavoured wine from Elim and elegant, juicy wine from Franschhoek, to produce a wine full of flavour and complexity. The nose reflects raspberry and cranberry fruit with liquorice and green pepper spice. The splash of Viognier adds a rose-petal perfume.
