a Wine Estate of distinction ...
When asked: "Which one of your wines is your favourite?" David replied: "You can just as well ask me which one of my children I love the most....."
David van Velden sr.
"You can't make a good wine if you're impatient."
Braam van Velden
"Sampling wines like Chateaux Angelus and Petrus, Chevel Blanc and from Vouvray is a very humbling, but also inspiring experience. But then I can say exactly the same of the 1970 Overgaauw Cabernet I tasted last year. It is still showing amazing colour, fruit and structure after all these years. And best of all I could share it with my grandfather who made it."
David van Velden jun., August 2005
Overgaauw a wine estate of distinction was founded by Abraham van Velden in 1905 on land, owned by his family since 1783, in the Stellenbosch Kloof. For the past century the Van Veldens have produced acclaimed wines at Overgaauw, making it one of the oldest family run estates in the area.
The estate's 70ha of south facing vineyards are planted on deep weathered granite soils, cooled by sea breezes from False Bay, providing the ideal microclimate for the cultivation of noble grape varieties. Meticulous viticultural practices including varietal site selection and low yields ensure that only the very best grapes are used for Overgaauw wines. These are vinified in the renovated and expanded old cellar, fusing modern winemaking techniques with 100 years of experience. Very few things remain exceptional for four generations, but Overgaauw's wines have done just that.
A proud family tradition of producing quality wines and one of the most beautiful settings in the Cape make Overgaauw Wine Estate well worth a visit.
