The competition which consisted of a 45 minute, 100-point written exam, a five minute Menu Corrections section, a Service section which scores on international wine pairing, decantation technique and a blind champagne and spirit tasting as well as a verbal wine tasting section.
No small feat for the contestants, but something Krone took in his stride after being named South Africa's Best Jeunes Sommelier earlier this year.
"It was such an amazing experience to be able to draw on my knowledge and skills against the best in the world," says Krone. "All the sommeliers formed an instant bond and I am extremely happy with my placing in the competition."
Being named joint-fourth in the world is something that the Saxon MD, Mr George Cohen is elated by, "Francis' knowledge of wine has helped bring back some of the most discerning wine clients in Johannesburg to our restaurant. He has done himself proud, his family name proud and the Saxon proud."
