Wonderful Winelands Winter specials
01 June 2012  by WINE.CO.ZA
Winter in the winelands is a time for enjoying all the wonderful specials offered by the local restaurants. Here are a few of our favourites.
Clos Malverne

The Restaurant at Clos Malverne, nestled in the Devon Valley outside Stellenbosch, welcomes winter with a feast of comforting classics, conjured up in an exclusive Winter Warmer Menu which alternates weekly. In addition, the restaurant’s signature Food and Wine Pairing Menu also features a new sumptuous lineup of hearty dishes. The new Winter Warmer Menu, which turns up the heat from Tuesdays to Fridays until the end of August, offers enthusiasts a three course lunchtime food and wine indulgence of generous portions at a mere R158 per person. Each dish on this sizzling bill of fare is served with a matching Clos Malverne wine. For more information please click here.

Durbanville Hills

As part of the Durbanville Wine Valley's annual Soup, Sip and Bread Festival to be held on the weekend of 2 and 3 June, The Eatery at Durbanville Hills Wines will offer a soup buffet at lunch time on the Saturday and the Sunday. The menu includes four different soups each paired with Durbanville Hills' wines and served with a selection of oven-fresh breads. For more information please click here.

Eagles' Nest

Eagles' Nest wine estate in the Constantia Valley has just launched an exciting and innovative offering of "Soup and Wine Pairings", just in time for winter! Visitors to the Tasting Room this winter can now take a seat alongsidethe  fireplace and enjoy a generous bowl of hot, steaming soup, perfectly paired with one of Eagles' Nest's fine wines. Enjoy a hot, steaming bowl of soup paired with a glass of their best-matched white wine for just R65, or a bowl paired with the tastiest red accompaniment from their range for just R75. Haute Cabrière

Because the Cape enjoys mild winters, Haute Cabrière will be taking advantage of the beautiful balmy afternoons with a newly introduced terrace menu, to encourage guests to linger after their tasting room experience. Guests can enjoy oysters, cheese or duck liver parfait plates, with home baked ciabatta and a selection of tapas. This menu is available only on the terrace (weather dependant) and served from 15h00 to 19h00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and weekdays (excluding Mondays) and Sundays until 17h00. During autumn and winter (May to August), Haute Cabrière Restaurant is open for lunch Tuesdays to Sundays, and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information please click here.

Holden Manz

A new menu infused with exotic flavours of the orient and a passion for cutting edge cuisine with a strong Pacific rim twist is what new Executive Chef Cheyne Morrisby is serving up this winter at the Franschhoek Kitchen at Holden Manz Wine Estate. Paired perfectly with signature wines from Holden Manz, Cheyne’s winter dishes offer you a multitude of choices for a memorable feast with an international flavour. The Franschhoek Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and Sundays for lunch. For more information please click here.

The Winter Special includes a choice of three starters, three mains, two desserts and a cheese board, with dishes changing according to seasonal availability of ingredients. Both deals include a complimentary glass of award-winning Kleine Zalze wine to set the mood. For more information please click here.

Nitida

This winter sees Cassia restaurant, located on the scenic Nitida wine farm in the Durbanville valley, boasting warming comfort food favourites on its brand new winter menu. Having joined Cassia in 2009, chef proprietor Warren Swaffield’s philosophy is simple and a recipe for success: honest, uncomplicated flavours, generous portions and quality ingredients. This is all evident in his brand new winter menu, which has classic comfort favourites, some Italian and Asian influences and a good helping of local classics. With this winter menu’s combination of hearty and lighter dishes, quality local wines, a stunning Cape Town winelands setting and professional service to boot, Nitida is set to be a hot spot this winter. Winter Specials for the second string South Africans John - 01 June 2012
I love the Winelands dearly. There are some fantastic places and people, but I really struggle to get excited about "Winter Specials" that are there to attract locals to producers establishments. Some are themed, well priced affairs, priced similarly to summer. Others are a slap in the face for our local wine tourists. Eight months a year we can not afford to take our families to these "Internationally flavoured" joints, catering to our visitors and swallows. Please take a bow all those restaurants in the Winlands who remain aimed at our local market; all year round. You all know who you are!!!! Maybe the way to attract loyal customers to your estates who will continue to purchase your wine, come hot or cold, would be to get them to your farm in the first place, not just to taste, but to experince.
