New Michelangelo trophy for the Best Bordeaux Blend announced

Entries for the Michelangelo International Wine Awards are open, and an
impressive panel of international wine experts will this year again be
ready to award Grand d'Or (double gold), gold and silver medals as well
as a total of thirteen trophies.
This year a new trophy is introduced, namely the Tonnellerie de Mercurey Trophy for the Best Bordeaux Blend.
"We are pleased to offer this new trophy to producers, especially as we have had numerous requests for a special Bordeaux Blend category," says Lorraine Immelman, owner and MD of the Michelangelo Awards. "Thanks also to the RX Group for sponsoring this trophy."
What makes the Michelangelo unique?
"The 'international' in the competition's name refers to the completely international panel of judges, and the fact that this competition is considered widely as equal in importance and consequence to many other wine competitions around the world where local and foreign wines are judged by expert outsiders," says Immelman. "No doubt the industry's support is shown by the fact that the Michelangelo has received in the region of 1 500 entries annually in the past three consecutive years!"
Since the competition's inception in 1997, more than 150 international wine experts from 36 countries served on the panels. This year the judging panel consists of an impressive round-up from fourteen different countries. The complete line-up for 2012 is:

All entries are judged blind using the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) 100-point system. The judging process and all results are audited by J Vermooten Chartered Accountants (SA).
A competition of firsts:
The Michelangelo International Wine Awards was the first South African competition to accept local and international brandies and the first to honour the finest with a Brandy Trophy.
It is also the only competition which acknowledges small winemakers (Garagiste) in South Africa and awards a Garagiste Trophy. Other trophies include accolades for the Best Pinotage, the Best Dessert Wine as well as Fairtrade Red and White Trophies, an Organic Trophy and a trophy for the competition's Top Producer. The Fairtrade trophies, awarded to Fairtrade certified wineries for the second year running, are sponsored by Pick 'n Pay in support of the best ethically and sustainably produced wines.
Confirming the industry's support:
The international CCL Wine Group, with its head office in Canada, has also confirmed its commitment and support for the competition by extending their sponsorship for a further five years. The company's general manager in South Africa, Denver Kirsten, commented that the CCL's Wine Group sees the Michelangelo Wine Awards as a partner in the wine industry: "This unique wine event celebrates excellence in the industry and our renewed five year commitment with the Michelangelo Wine Awards shows tangible support and commitment to the South African wine industry - an industry we are passionate about."
Stellenbosch-based CCL Label annually prints and supplies approximately four-million silver, gold, Gran d'Or and trophy award labels for the competition's winning wines.
