Local winemaker Bruwer Raats? 2002 Raats Chenin Blanc has set a new standard for Chenin that is growing in popularity in the United States of America when the world-renowned Wine Spectator magazine gave the Chenin Blanc an unprecedented rating of 91.
Described as pineapple flavours with spiciness, aniseed and hints of butterscotch, the reviewer characterises the distinct flavour profile of this wine as a 'massive wine with good balance between acidity and sugar with a finish that seems to last forever'.
A delighted Raats said that he was extremely proud of the achievement of this wine, which has already received wide acclaim locally including a gold medal at the 2003 Michelangelo International Wine Awards and 4-stars in the John Platter Wine Guide.
'This is the highest rating they?ve ever given to a South African Chenin Blanc. Raats Family Wines are committed to producing world-class Chenin Blancs and this rating proves that Chenin Blanc is a world-class variety,' mentions Raats. According to Raats, South Africa has become the new world leader in this variety and he predicts that South African Chenins are set to take the world by storm.
'South African winemakers are discovering the true potential of Chenin Blanc and are paying the same attention to Chenin Blanc as to the other white varieties,' states Raats.
