2010 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Wines announced
30 July 2010  by Cape Winemakers Guild
Great diversity and a record number of white wines and debuts by new members are the hallmark of the 2010 selection of exclusive wines that will go under the hammer at the 26th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction to be held at Spier outside Stellenbosch on Saturday, 2 October.
Recognised as South Africa's leading wine auction open to the wine trade and the general public with a turnover of over R5 million, the Guild Auction features an impressive lineup of 39 wines this year. All the wines are crafted exclusively for the auction and are chosen in a blind tasting by members of the Guild to represent the pinnacle of what can be achieved in South African winemaking. This year's auction wines, all poised to become rare collector's items, include 21 red wines, 13 white wines, 3 Méthode Cap Classiques, a dessert wine and a port.

"Exactly the same number of wines as last year was picked in a very tough auction selection tasting," says Guild Chairman Johan Malan of Simonsig, who considers the wines that made the cut this year a superb selection representing all the major categories.

"The 39 wines are spread over 19 different types and styles, offering great variety to please many different tastes. It reaffirms our members' ability to create individualistic and exciting wines. Diversity is indeed in our Nature!" said Johan.

This year three new members, Andries Burger of Paul Cluver, Pierre Wahl of Rijk's Private Cellar, and Frans Smit of Spier, are making their debut and the auction sees the return of some old stalwarts.

"It all augurs well for a very interesting and exciting 2010 auction," adds Johan, who has two wines on auction this year, Simonsig Cuvée Chêne Cap Classique 2004 and his 2008 Auction Reserve Shiraz.

Abrie Beeslaar, who joined the Guild in 2008, will make his auction debut with two Kanonkop wines, the CWG Paul Sauer 2007 and a 2008 Pinotage. Pierre Wahl also has two debut auction wines, Rijk's Private Cellar Auction Reserve Chenin Blanc 2009; the only Chenin Blanc chosen this year, and Rijk's Private Cellar Auction Reserve Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009. Frans Smit's first time offering, a Spier Merlot 2008, is the only Merlot in the auction lineup. Andries Burger is making his debut with the Paul Cluver "The Wagon Trail" Chardonnay 2009.
Christopher Keet formerly of Cordoba Winery has an auction wine under his own label this year, the Keets Viognier 2009, this year's only auction Viognier.

A number of the auction regulars have two wines in this year's lineup including David Nieuwoudt with the only Semillon, Cederberg Private Cellar Semillon 2010 and Teen die Hoog Shiraz 2008. Jacques Borman has two big reds, Boschkloof CWG Conclusion 2006 and his Auction Reserve Shiraz 2007. Teddy Hall makes his Méthode Cap Classique debut with his Tribute MCC 2003 and the Mediterranean White 2008 his second auction wine. Danie Steytler has two Kaapzicht reds in the lineup, his Cape Blend Auction Reserve 2007 and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Auction Reserve 2007. Adi Badenhorst, who made his debut at the 2008 auction, has had two wines chosen this year, the only Botrytis dessert wine on auction, AA Badenhorst Family Wines Kalmoesfontein Semillon Noble Late Harvest Volume 2 2008 and his Auction Red 2005. Jeff Grier's auction Cap Classique is the Villiera Shooting Star 2007 with a Cabernet Franc, Mother Earth 2008 his second offering. Louis Nel's two auction wines are Louis Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 and Hidden Valley Top Secret 2008. Charles Hopkins has the De Grendel Op die Berg Pinot Noir 2009 and his Amandelboord Sauvignon Blanc 2010, one of just two Sauvignon Blancs on auction this year, the other being John Loubser's Steenberg The Magus 2009.

Distinctly different from wines bottled under the members' own labels, the CWG Auction wines are chosen at a blind tasting and only those showing technical excellence and maturation potential are chosen. This thorough process involving the members of the Guild ensures that every wine boasting the CWG Auction label is a wine of exceptional quality.

Since its inception in 1985, the Nedbank CWG Auction has become a quality benchmark and the CWG label is an authentic assurance of quality recognised by leading wine buyers both locally and from abroad.

While the vast majority of buyers at the auction are local, there has been a surge of international interest in recent years and overseas pre-auction tastings will be held again this year in the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Hong Kong and New York.

Local wine enthusiasts can taste the auction wines at Auction Showcases at the CTICC in Cape Town at 18h00 on Thursday, 12 August and at 18h30 at The Atrium, Nedbank Sandton in Johannesburg on Thursday, 2 September.

The 26th Nedbank CWG Auction is open to the public and will be held at the Spier Conference Centre in the Stellenbosch Winelands on Saturday, 2 October 2010. Prospective buyers who are unable to attend the auction on the day, can register in advance with the CWG and take advantage of their telephonic and proxy bidding facilities.
