Cape Legends
An interesting and varied selection of wines from the Cape Legends portfolio will come under the hammer of Bonham’s Anthony Barne MW at the Nederburg Auction on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 at Nederburg in Paarl.
Twelve bottles of 1971 Alto Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the oldest wines at this year’s event, will be auctioned in the Private Collection category. An exquisite wine matured in ideal conditions and made by winemaker Piet du Toit, it’s a tribute to the contribution he has made to South African wine.

Wines from Le Bonheur include the estate’s 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic wine with a rich plum sheen and signature notes of black fruit, cassis, tobacco leaf and cigar box, as well as its 2000 and 2001 Prima. Le Bonheur Prima is winemaker Sakkie Kotzé’s signature red blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, showing typical Merlot characters of cassis and spice, enriched by black fruit from the Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2003 vintage of Uitkyk’s iconic Carlonet, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, will also be offered for sale. This sumptuous, velvety blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a small percentage of Shiraz.

Two of Neethlingshof’s Pinotage wines will be showcased, including the 2001 Lord Neethling Pinotage and 2006 Owl Post Pinotage, both full-bodied with abundant cherry, vanilla and oak spice flavours. Also on offer from Neethlingshof will be the 2006 Gewürztraminer, a spicy wine with floral undertones, and the 2003 Weisser Riesling Noble Late Harvest which has a typical botrytis cinerea nose of dried apricot, honey and peach. Its acidic palate tempers the wine’s sweetness, accenting its apricot character and giving it a refreshing and vibrant edge.

Plaisir de Merle’s 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon will also be offered for sale. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and including small percentages of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, it displays a ripe mix of blackcurrant, sweet plum and chocolate with spicy wood tones backed by soft tannins. The final inclusion from the Cape Legends portfolio is Stellenzicht’s 1998 Pinotage. Winemaker Guy Webber’s first vintage at Stellenzicht, it demonstrates his strong passion for the varietal. Expect a melange of plump forest-floor fruits with spicy clove and a hint of tropical banana.
