SA Chenin nears "tipping point"
28 February 2012  by Gabriel Savage, www.thedrinksbusiness.com
Chenin Blanc from South Africa is approaching a "tipping point", according to one of the variety's biggest pioneers, Ken Forrester.
The winemaker, whose own FMC has done much to promote the potential of this widespread but historically under-rated grape variety, reported a growing enthusiasm for Chenin Blanc, saying: “It’s building its own momentum now.”

The most recent figures from 2010 show that Chenin represents 18% of South Africa’s total hectares under vine, compared to the 10% share for Sauvignon Blanc and 8% share for Chardonnay.

However, while these latter two varieties have seen their proportions more than double since 1990, plantings of Chenin almost halved in that time, as many winemakers put their faith in more widely available international grapes.

However, Forrester, who is also head of the Chenin Blanc Association, is convinced of a reversal in the variety’s fortunes. “More producers are planting Chenin and making serious wine,” he confirmed.

Swartland chris - 28 February 2012
As a chenin convert, I give credit to the boys from the Swartland for introducing me to it.
Great balanced wines from their bushvines and with a freshness without the high acids taking the polish off my teeth! Well done Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst, Chris Mullineax and a few others!
KALAHARI CHENINS Johann van Schalkwyk - 29 November 2012
I agree that the cultivar Chenin Blanc is underrated in South Africa. So is the Orange River Wine Cellar's Chenin Blanc (unwooded) and Chenin de Barrique (wooded). The 2011 year of producing Chenin Blanc surely must be one of the best in the history of the cellar! But, perhaps and because they are a day long drive from the traditinal Cape winelands, Orange River Wine Cellars suffer from the phenonmenon "out of sight, out of heart". These two wines deserve more attention - the unwooded for easy drinking and being the catalyst of a roudy pool party on a hot summer's day / night ... while the barrique will be more to the liking of the boe tie types, the ones who like listening to some serious opera or discussing the equally complex situation in Israel / Palestine.
