Seven awards for two Boplaas Cape Tawnies
08 May 2012  by Boplaas Family Vineyards
The Boplaas Reserve Cape Tawny 1997 were awarded Top 100 SA wines, Double gold Veritas, Winner at Port Challenge Museum Class, 5 stars at Platter and the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V received double gold at Veritas, winner at the Port Challenge Tawny Class, Port of the Year at SAA and 4 ½ star rating from Platter’s Guide 2012.
Winter brings sniping cold nights and white frosty mornings for most of the country; while howling winds and sheets of rain pelt the fairest Cape, and the Durbanites can still surf in the middle of July! Short of moving to Durban or booking weekly flights to avoid the worst of the winter chill, we here at Boplaas advise a glass or two of our fine Boplaas Cape Tawny. The amber-brown elixir with its citrus, spice, honey, caramel and nutty aromas; the lusciously smooth palate and its restorative spirit grip will keep winter at bay, while livening up rustic winter fare.

Recently the superb quality and satisfaction offered by this wine was highlighted by Cathy Marston – wine writer and local organizer of the internationally recognized Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) course – in her wine column on Food24.com. The dedication and patience required in crafting a fine Cape Tawny is unparalleled; as the “base” wine requires almost a decade in barrel to attain the typical amber-brown Tawny colour; its distinctive nutty-aromatics and artful blending to craft a complex, structured and enjoyable wine.

In crafting a Boplaas Cape Tawny the old adage of "a the wine is made in the vineyards", rings true as only the finest Tinta Barocca is selected="true" in the vineyard, hand harvested and fermented in traditional lagares to produce the inky black wines destined to age slowly in large old barrels for a decade or more. Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V (non-Vintage) is an expert selection of barrel matured Tinta Barocca, a significant portion having aged a decade or more in barrel, to producing a complex and sumptuous Cape Tawny that exhibits all the traits that make this style so exceptional. A multi-award winner, the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V received double gold at Veritas 2011; was the category winner and “Reserve Champion” at the CAPPA “Port Challenge” 2011; as well as receiving a 4 ½ star rating from Platter’s Guide 2012. Boplaas’s Cape Tawnys have also being crowned “Port of the Year” at the South African Airways wine selection five years in a row – from 2007 to 2011.

Traditionally Boplaas Cape Tawny would be enjoyed after a meal accompanied by mature cheeses, fig preserve or a decadent dessert like Malva pudding, chocolate gateau or traditional rice pudding; however this wine is equally adept at pairing with a host of tapas; roast duck with orange sauce (cunard L’orange) or grilled duck breasts; a waterblommetjie bredie with roast sweet potatoes; fine charcuterie or as mixer with tonic water for a refreshing long drink. To savour the complex aromatics pour a judicious amount of Boplaas Cape Tawny in a red or white wine glass and its best served lightly chilled at 12 to 14C or cooler.

The Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V is available at all good retailers throughout South Africa and is available for tasting and purchase from our cellar door in Calitzdorp at R90 p/b.
