4G Wines' maiden vintage G. 2010, aiming to become a First Growth of the
Cape, has exceeded expectations and received praise from some of the
world's top wine critics and publications.
G. 2010 is the result of 4G Wines utilizing an unorthodox and unique approach to winemaking, whilst applying an absolute “quality-over-quantity” standard. Drawing from the best of the Old and the New World, 4G Wines combines European winemaking expertise, craftsmanship and innovative technologies with South Africa’s outstanding natural assets and winemaking skills. The result is nothing short of spectacular.
The wine is the result of a harmonious collaboration between art and science.
Giorgio Dalla Cia was responsible for pioneering the first commercial Rubicon blend in 1980 together with Meerlust owner Nico Myburgh. In 1980, he received the trophy as South Africa’s Champion Winemaker. The award for the best red blend in the world was given to Giorgio for the 2001 vintage Rubicon.
Denis Dubourdieu is described by Decanter as “wine’s most famous scientist”. He has access to the latest data as a professor and Director of the General Institute of Oenology in Bordeaux and consults for world famous estates such as Cheval Blanc, Château Yquem and Paul Jaboulet Aîné where the legendary Hermitage La Chapelle is made. He has also achieved considerable success in producing wines on his family’s four estates in France and he now brings his remarkable knowledge and experience to 4G Wines.
And finally, there is our local winemaker, Mia Fischer – emblematic of local passion, youthfulness and talent. She graduated from the Institute for Agricultural Training at Elsenburg in Stellenbosch with diplomas in Viticulture and Cellar Technology and has worked both locally and in Germany, France and New Zealand.
The blend is composed of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Shiraz, 12% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, chosen from 12 different vineyards across the Cape Winelands. It displays a bouquet of spicy, peppery aromas with notes of eucalyptus and artichokes over a subtle background of dried plums and cassis as well as burgeoning dark berries. It is beautifully balanced with an extraordinary ageing potential extending to 2040 and beyond.
International acclaim for 4G Wines’ debut vintage
Shortly after its launch, G. 2010 collected top scores from wine journalists around the globe: René Gabriel (Switzerland) awarded it 19 out of a possible 20 point score, stating enthusiastically that it has the potential to become ‘an icon’. Jeff Leve (USA) and Wein+Markt (Germany) rated the wine 94 points. Whilst Wine Spectator (USA), in its May 2012 issue, scored it an impressive 93 points (best rating for a red wine in their comprehensive South Africa tasting – 475 wines).
G. 2010: A wine of grace and quality.
