Rustenberg appoints Indigo Wine Group as their new US Importer
10 August 2012  by Indigo Wine Group
Returning from an extended trip to his native South Africa, Johann Meissenheimer, Managing Director of the Indigo Wine Group, announced today that his company will be taking over representation of Rustenberg Estate Wines for the United States.
Meissenheimer stated, “I feel privileged to be representing such a well-respected brand, one that has withstood the test of time. Rustenberg was one of the original South African Cape wine estates and has been growing grapes, vinifying and bottling wines on the same Stellenbosch property since 1682. As a born-and-bred South African, who worked in the wine industry for ten years before coming to the States, I am very familiar with Rustenberg’s long-standing reputation for regionally-true wines of substance. Rustenberg could certainly be considered one of South Africa’s quintessential brands.”

When questioned about his selection of Indigo to represent his company, Rustenberg owner Simon Barlow said, “Rustenberg has been present in the US market for many years, being a pioneer in the push to sell quality South African wines in the USA, beginning in the mid 1990’s. We have an old, recognizable brand and make wines which have both ‘old’ and ‘new’ world identities. We have a global following for our wines, and we are a great example of how old estates in established wine regions make high quality, age-worthy wines in the modern age. Indigo’s South African roots and sold base in the US market, with a focus mainly on South African brands, made the company an obvious choice for Rustenberg.”

Meissenheimer added, “Sales of South African wines continue to grow in the US, even in this challenging economy. I believe it is because South Africa offers US consumers first-class wines at virtually unmatched price points. Mr Barlow has a saying, ‘It’s South Africa’s turn to shine,’ and I wholeheartedly agree. South Africa’s strength as a country is its regionality. And Rustenberg makes regionally distinctive, absolutely superb wines that embody the Stellenbosch region.”

A selection of Rustenberg’s wines will be available in the United States this fall.

Founded ten years ago this March in Venice, Florida, the Indigo Wine Group works with 65 distributors in 45 states. Considered one of the top South African wine specialists in the US, Indigo represents Groot Constantia, the country’s oldest winery, Barista, creating a new category with Coffee Pinotage, Bon Cap, the country’s first certified organic wine farm, Reyneke, a celebrated bio-dynamic winery with chart-topping ratings, Robertson Winery, whose unparalleled rise to prominence underscores its position as ‘South Africa’s favorite wine’, Lion’s Lair – at the epicenter of the Swartland Wine Revolution, and coming this fall, Rustenberg Estate Wines, established in 1682, offering age-worthy wines for the modern age. False Claims johan - 10 August 2012
Since when has the Lions Lair been at the "epicentre" of the Swartland Wine Revolution?
I have been following this remarkable regional shake-up by a few producers, and have never heard their name mentioned before, so I am intrigued to know
