Asara Wine
The Chardonnay with the highest score at this year's competition was Asara’s 2003 Chardonnay Reserve – a wine which was created with the intention to celebrate the maximum potential of this variety.
At this year’s Fairbairn Capital Trophy Wine Show a total of 995 wines were to be judged. 126 of them were Chardonnays. Interestingly, despite the high prestige some of South Africa’s Chardonnays are gaining locally and internationally, none of them was awarded with a trophy or gold medal, making a silver medal the highest distinction in this class. The Chardonnay with the highest score was Asara’s 2003 Chardonnay Reserve – a wine which was created with the intention to celebrate the maximum potential of this variety. In addition to the Silver medal from Fairbairn, this wine already has two Gold medals behind its name - Veritas Gold from 2005 and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Gold medal from 2005. In the making of this wine, Asara’s winemaker Jan van Rooyen focussed on preserving the richness and full flavour profile this grape has got to offer. Complexity was achieved by allowing the wine to undergo maturation for 11 months in French oak barrels in contact with the full yeast compliment. Elegance and power come forth in the fresh citrus and creamy vanilla aromas. On the palate there is subtle integration of Chardonnay fruit flavours with French oak characteristics. The wine is available from the estate for R68.00 per bottle. For enquiries please contact Asara Wine Estate, Stellenbosch Tel: (021) 888-8000 or email: info@asarawine.com
