TOUR DESCRIPTION Day 1 - PAARL/FRANSCHHOEK We descend to another world on a guided cellar tour followed by a Mentor's tasting at the world-renowned KWV Wine Emporium, cellar door to one of the leading wine and spirit producers in South Africa. Experience the magical Cathedral Cellar, view maturation cellars, stainless steel tanks and marvel at the five largest Vats in the world. We then take a turn around 'the rock' to Fairview, on the slopes of Paarl Mountain - a busy, happy, humming wine farm where we will taste a vast array of different wine styles together with internationally award winning farm style Jersey milk and goat?s milk cheeses. The landmark Goats Tower is where many of the goats soak up the sun. Then on to La Motte Winery, home to some of South Africa?s finest wines, recognized internationally for their exceptional quality. In harmony with the production of wines, La Motte has also ventured into flower cultivation and the production of ethereal oils. The estate has a strong commitment to historic and cultural preservation, as well as the active socio-economic upliftment of its workers and their families. After tasting their wines, our lunch stop is at the Pierneef a La Motte Restaurant (for own account). The final wine tasting experience for the day will be at L?Ormarins, where we are privileged to experience a tour of the estate and experience the fundamental belief that the source of supreme wine quality lies in the land; that a specific terroir, with soil and climate working together to capture the essence of each particular grape variety, dictates the style of wine that speaks powerfully of the highest quality and most genuine character. In the cellars, the fruit from the vines are treated with the highest level of care through the winemaking process to create a wine that is true to the natural characteristics of the grapes from the vines. Then it is on to our overnight stop at Maison Chablis in the town of Franschhoek to enjoy genuine South African hospitality. Evening and dinner at leisure.
Day 2 - STELLENBOSCH Our day kicks off with a morning visit to Middelvlei. The urban sprawl of Stellenbosch comes to an abrupt halt, in its south-western suburb of Onderpapegaai, when you enter the gates of Middelvlei. Suddenly, before you lies a beautiful vineyard-strewn amphitheatre overlooking the Bottelary Hills and the upper reaches of Devon Valley. This is the home of the Momberg family, who have been wine farmers since 1919. On arrival, the 'official' welcoming committee of family pets, including dogs (all named after wine varietals), pot belly pigs, pygmy goats, donkeys and many more, will escort you to the tasting room. The wines are also pretty spectacular! Then on to Amani Vineyards located on the southern slope of Kanonkop, the tallest of the hills to the west of Stellenbosch. The vineyards are graced by the ocean breezes of False Bay to the South, the Atlantic to the West and is one of the coolest regions in the Stellenbosch area. Breathtaking views of Table Mountain, the Cape Point, False Bay and the mountains to the east and north provide a panorama that is awe inspiring.
The phenomenal winemaking team of Gary and Kathy Jordan at Jordan Wines is our next stop for a tasting. Their philosophy: success begins in the vineyards. Exceptional wines are made possible be careful management of the farm's extensive natural assets through innovative canopy management and selecting varieties and clones specifically suited to the various soils and slopes. They recently collaborated with award-winning chef, George Jardine, to open Jordan Restaurant, which is our lunch stop. The menus change daily, but the format for lunch and dinner remain the same throught the year. George sources only fresh, local produce, which means you get the best quality chef making your meal with the reshest ingredients. The dining expereince will satisfy all senses from sight through to palate, ensuring a menorable occasion (for own account). After a leisurely lunch, we stop off at Clos Malverne - a family affair! Seymour and Sophia Pritchard oversee the entire operation with help from son-in-law, daughter running the spa and brother in the restaurant. Clos Malverne produced the first Cape Blend to achieve a 5 star ratingin the prestigious Platter Wine Guide - the Auret. We then make our way to the town of Stellenbosch where you check in at your hotel for the evening, Eendracht Boutique Hotel. Dinner and evening at leisure.
Day 3 - STELLENBOSCH How better to end a gastronomic dream tour than a morning free to explore Stellenbosch; the second oldest town in South Africa, also known as Eikestad, ?village of oaks?, and Dorp Street; which has the longest row of old surviving buildings in South Africa. Oom Samie Se Winkel will transport you to a bygone era of high street shopping. Your guide will meet you back at the hotel at 12h00, and then it's off to the nearby town of Somerset West. It is time to learn How To Pair Food and Wine with Katinka van Niekerk, renowned specialist and advisor to many of South Africa?s most celebrated chefs, who will use a simple but effective technique of show and taste in matching a line-up of seven wines with a selection of dishes. Depending on when Katinka wraps up, if there is time your guide will include another winery visit.
