Klaas Stoffberg

Winemaker
Babylonstoren
“Babylonstoren isn’t a normal wine cellar – it’s a destination. The restaurants, the spa, the hotel and the magnificent garden are all part of the recipe for its success. Every season holds a new surprise and it’s a joy to be able to witness it year after year.”

Klaas Stoffberg is an exceptional winemaker and has played an essential role in the development and growth of the wines produced on Babylonstoren.

He grew up among the vineyards on his family farm, which is where his love for viniculture developed. Initially, Klaas was on his way to study architecture, but his interest in winemaking was just too strong. After completing BAgric (Viticulture and Oenology) at Stellenbosch University (Elsenburg), Klaas joined Dellrust Wineries as assistant winemaker. Growing in his passion he moved on to the Napa Valley in the USA, Bordeaux in France and Rust en Vrede in South Africa. And after five years at Ernie Els Wines, he joined the Babylonstoren team.

He has learnt some of his biggest lessons at Babylonstoren. “With winemaking, every year is something new and different, and through the years I have learnt the importance of adapting and adjusting to the different challenges. There are no shortcuts in winemaking.”

Klaas’s passion for winemaking is evident in the numerous accolades and awards he has received on behalf of Babylonstoren, but he still has many goals that he wants to achieve. “Long-term goals include becoming a Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) member and seeing Babylonstoren on the list of 100 best wine destinations in the world.” He also emphasises the importance of doing small things with precision and diligence in order to ensure that it fits in with the bigger picture of success.

Klaas is a keen mountain biker, golfer and trail runner. When asked what he would have done if he wasn’t a winemaker, Klaas has one answer: “a stay-at-home dad!”
