Leroy Africa

I started working in the industry when I was still at school as a function waiter at the Italian Club where I learnt how to serve and open my first wine bottle with a corkscrew at the age of 15.

Leroy is the candidate wine steward for Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers in the 2017 Cape Legends & Artisan Spirits Inter Hotel Challenge.

I started working in the industry when I was still at school as a function waiter at the Italian Club where I learnt how to serve and open my first wine bottle with a corkscrew at the age of 15. From there on I thought I knew everything I needed to know until I turned 18 and went to my first wine farm with some friends. I learnt how wine is made and I couldn’t pronounce the names of the wines correctly but I got familiar with this when I worked at the Southern Sun in Waterfront for 2 and a half years. I got to go to a lot more wine farms and did some wine training with Miguel Chan. This is where I discovered I don’t know everything as I thought I did, but my willingness to learn was and is always there.

For fun I’m very outgoing and still like going to wine farms. My girlfriend studies in Stellenbosch University, I like to go for long drives and go for a hike now and then. I love going to wine festivals and fine dining restaurants as I use my entertainer app to guide me. I currently work at Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers and have been there for 3 and half years as an ala carte waiter where I spend most of my time and enjoy working with my colleagues.
