Zintle Mkize

Candidate wine steward for the 2017 Cape Legends & Artisan Spirits Inter Hotel Challenge

Zintle is the candidate wine steward for The Maslow in the 2017 Cape Legends & Artisan Spirits Inter Hotel Challenge.

I am a young and energetic female. My family comes from a small town called UMzimkhulu in Kwa-Zulu Natal. We are a small family of 6, two brothers with mother and father, currently residing in Boksburg on the East rand. I am a mother to a two year old baby boy.

I  started studying hospitality in high school and this is where I learnt about the different careers and what the industry was about. I learnt a lot in high school but I got more exposed to everything when I started working in a hotel and suddenly everything made sense and I got to see that everything was actually real and this was an industry that I would probably grow in because everyday at work meant learning something new.

I now have 5 years experience in food and beverage and I am working on adding more years.

In 2015 I got introduced to the wine industry through a WSET Level 1 course ,at first I was not interested because I knew a few wines and paired them with the few dishes. I went to course anyway.

At the course I could not believe how I paid so much attention to what was going on, I even found myself continuing the lecture at home by myself. There was just so many interesting things to learn and all of this just made me wish I had done it earlier. I now hold a WSET level 2 certificate and I cannot wait to do my level 3.

I am a current Hospitality management student at the International Hotel school online. This course allows me to increase my knowledge in the industry and because It is in line with what I aspire to be I get to fall in love with the industry even more.

I am very passionate about learning new things and developing myself so I take every single opportunity that comes my way and make the most of it.
