Xolani Masinga

Xolani Surprize Mzileni from Empangeni in Richards Bay kicked out his career in the hospitality industry in 2009 when he joined the Oyster box hotel. He immediately fell in love with the whole industry but something clicked inside his brain when he found himself in the mentorship and training hands of wine expert Thato Goimane.

Xolani knew this is what he wanted to do and his fascinating with wine-making began.

Right now, Xolani is working for the Protea hotel by Marriott Durban Edward. Under their auspices, Xolani has developed a greater understanding and love for the wine industry, enjoying not just the wine itself but everything about the process from planting, harvesting through to the actual wine making process. In so doing, he has kindled a deep appreciation for nature itself. When he discovered that most spirits, including vodka, whiskey, brandy, and cognac, are all made from natural ingredients, and that they are planted like grapes, he immediately set about understanding this wonderful product of a natural harvest.

He’s not done with the learning yet and strives to work his way through as many aspects of the industry as he can in order to take it all in. Ultimately, he aim to become a wine sommelier.

“My vision is built from my passion and love for the industry,” he enthuses. “I also love being able to pair the right wine with meals from different cuisines. I believe being able to pair wine and food is very important and its one of the key roles of a wine sommelier.”
