In 1685, the revocation of the edict of Nantes prompted the flight of the French Huguenots from terror and persecution in their homeland to a safe haven in South Africa. In the same year Boschendal was granted to Jean le Long and our long association with French heritage began.
In 1789, while Parisians were storming the Bastille, at Boschendal we were laying the foundations of our gracious homestead, Rhone, completed in 1795 and home thereafter to generations of French Huguenots.

This year during the Bastille Festival weekend, we honor our French connections and doff our berets to the many wonderful advantages that this association has brought us.

The wonderful Methode Champenoise, developed in this country as Methode Cap Classique is the the exquisite process that adds bubbles and creamy mouthfeel to our delicate Chardonnay and Pinot noir in the Boschendal Brut. Our tempting patisserie: fluffy Madeleines and rich Croquembouche, Creme Brûlées and Tarte au Citron from the skillful hands of la belle Corinne Hattingh, our pastry chef. From our kitchen, Coq au vin and Boeuf Bourguignon to satisfy the appetite of the most revolutionary peasant!

Come to Boschendal and celebrate our 330th Bastille day with us.

The Wine Tasting Room, Deli and Farm Stall and The Werf Restaurant are open for meals and wine tasting experiences, specially created for this important event in our history. Please contact us to book.

The Franschhoek Bastille Festival is a fantastic celebration of freedom and a great opportunity to enjoy the local food and wine that our valley is well known for.
