As part of the new art exhibition Thoughtful Journey – a celebration of female artists in the La Motte Museum, Peter Elliott (writer and great-nephew of artist Nita Spilhaus) will be presenting a talk at La Motte on Friday, 27 November 2015 at 19:00.

It is known that the period 1910 to 1930 was an important stage in the development of Cape Impressionism. At the time, a small group of European-trained painters were struggling to adapt their palettes to capture the indigenous light and colours of the Cape. While much has been written on female artists such as Irma Stern and Maggie Laubser – Peter Elliott’s newly launched publication Nita Spilhaus (1878 – 1967) and her artist friends in the Cape in the early twentieth century marks to be the first.

Peter Elliott will present the talk based on his book covering the life and art of Nita Spilhaus in relation to other female artists of the time, such as Florence Zerffi (1882 – 1962), Ruth Prowse (1883 – 1967) – also featured in the exhibition Thoughtful Journey – and Allerley Glossop (1870 – 1955), providing a new perspective on this circle of artist friends, their development and contribution to the arts in the Cape during the early twentieth century.

Please note that a first-ever comprehensive exhibition on Nita Spilhaus work is currently on view in the Sanlam Art Gallery, Bellville until 23 October 2015 and at the Gallery of Stephan Welz & Co, Alphen, Constantia from 19 November to 21 December 2015.
