Some believe that the preparation before hand, gathering around an open fire and wonderful aromas that accompany a warm fire is the essence of why we South Africans love Heritage Day. It’s a shared passion across many languages, cultures and regions and there’s no better way to celebrate our country’s rich heritage and culture in September, than with a barbeque, braai or wood-fired meals.

For one, Barley and Biltong Emporium, known for their delectable ‘larger-than-life’ burgers, home-made biltong and CBC craft beer offerings, will be making the most of the warmer spring weather, and light up the braai outdoors during the long weekend (23 to 25 September). Restaurant visitors can look forward to succulent meat straight from the open fire including boerewors, locally sourced from Spice Route Destination’s next door neighbour, Fairview, served with a traditional favourite, pap and smoor. Another Heritage Weekend menu highlight includes a good ole’ sirloin steak roll with rocket, tomato, caramelised onions and chimichurri sauce plus double-fried chips. While these limited edition, black board offerings promise to hike up any appetite, Barley and Biltong Emporium’s standard a la carté menu, kiddies’ selections and beverages will be available.

Bookings are essential and can be made at info@barleyandbiltong.co.za and 021 863 5200.

Another great Heritage Day lunch spot at Spice Route Destination, right next door to the iconic Wilderer Distillery, is La Grapperia Pizzeria and Bistro to offer an entertainment-filled 24 September (only) and fully fledged German braai menu. Those who have a knack for traditional German food are in for a treat as the restaurant, usually known for its German/Italian bistro offerings, Wilderer gin, and panoramic views of the Drakenstein Mountains, will be preparing selected meat cuts on the fire. Added to this will be live music by the Pappa Grappa jazz band from 11h30 to 15h30 and kiddies entertainment for most of the day.

Bookings are required at a cover charge of R35 per person (no charge for kids younger than 12) at grapperia@wilderer.co.za and 021 863 4367.

For a leisurely Heritage Day lunch filled with South African favourites, look into Bertus Basson at Spice Route’s decadent four-course menu. Think vetkoek, chicken curry, Tannie Hetta’s apple pie and much more, all served in a beautiful setting. The set menu, a standard Sunday-only offering, requires a pre-booking at R310 per adult. Picnic lovers are welcome to fill a basket with wine, cured meats, fresh salads and home baked patisseries from the restaurant’s Pak-’n-Mandjie section and settle on a sunny spot on Spice Route Destination’s sprawling lawns. Reservations for the Sunday lunch menu are essential can be made at reservations@bertusbasson.com or 021 863 5222.
