The 2010 Ernie Els Signature is similar to the empathic and precise 2009 although packs even more power and performance. Cabernet Sauvignon based, all five Bordeaux varieties contribute to its superior complexity, class and character. The black core with purple rim shows its huge concentration, with time needed in the glass to coerce its depth of flavours. Ripe mulberry, strawberries laced with balsamic, graphite and a hint of chocolate all follow through to the luxuriously textured palate.

The 2011 Proprietor's Blend exhibits an inky deep, black cherry hue and purple rim. Deep, exotic notes on the nose, whiffs of spear mint and flakes of dark chocolate compliment a melange of dense blue berry fruits. The strong Cabernet Sauvignon influence adds a salty liquorice attack following to cassis, grilled herbs and meaty edge from the dollop of Shiraz. Though full-bodied and rich, the mid-palate is fine and lively, leading to a polished, pure velvety, sweet-fruited finish.

Ernie Els Proprietor's Syrah 2011 Ernie Els Proprietor's Syrah 2011
A terrific vintage for Syrah where the warmer conditions assisted in an incredibly powerful, yet finely tuned wine. Inky purple with a black core, the nose opens to smoked beef, dense blueberry, a touch of cassis and hints of scorched earth. The palate is plush and inviting with ingrained dark chocolate, gamey spice and even a hint of black truffle. The polished tannins are slightly more open than the 2010, as they appear to be coated with eternal layers of sweet fruit. The finish is long and clear with a freshness and savoury edge balancing the purity of fruit. Utterly balanced for immediate enjoyment, it will age well for up to a decade.

The 2011 is a brooding yet fine vintage. Pure-fruited cassis on the nose open to a fine balance of dark chocolate, wet earth, delicate spice and dried herbs. The palate has a dark inky intensity punched by a core of mineral finesse and all wrapped by a broad-shouldered finish. The tannins are burly and taught, but will easily integrate with time as this decadent Cabernet Sauvignon will age well for a decade. Serious yet sumptuous.

The 2011 Merlot is a tempered, finely tuned beauty that shows great balance between seriousness and drinkability. Baked plums, smoked beef and chocolate on the nose lead to a juicy black currant strewn palate. A hint of soy sauce adds savouriness and complexity to the powerful, plush fruity core. The tannins have grip but yet are finely etched into a medium body, leading to a long fruity finish.

The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc shows exuberant and exotic, benchmark characters of pungent yellow fruits and a hint of green pepper. A tropical explosion on the palate is nicely balanced by elegant perfumed aromas, reminding one of a stroll through a daisy field. The finish is straw-like with a spicy complexity and an almost fatty texture, adding weight and carrying length.

The Big Easy is rich and emphatic in 2011 and yet, as the name suggests, still holds an amazingly easy silkiness on the palate. The dominant Shiraz offers complex notes of rosemary and cured meat whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a beguiling structure and sweet cherry fruit core. A playful tempo is created by dashes of Grenache, Viognier, Mourvèdre and Cinsault giving a fynbos and spicy edge along with a fragrant, almost honeycomb-like finish.

The second release of this very popular wine once again leaps from the glass with an extreme tropical vibrancy. A mélange of strawberry and pineapple flavours are all wound up by a limey-streak on the nose. Following through to a light but deft palate, the intense fruit strikes a perfect balance with creamy softness, and chalky minerality. Long and racy, the Big Easy Chenin Blanc is a fun yet engaging wine that is to be enjoyed now, with or without food.
