History

The Nieuwoudt family's connection with the Cederberg dates back to 1893. Since then there have been five generations of Nieuwoudts on the farm. Appropriately, the family name means ‘New Wood’. Far from the softer, settled scenes of the estates closer to Cape Town, the Nieuwoudts were pioneers, farming tobacco and fruit in this rocky, high-altitude terrain, before discovering that it provided the ideal terroir for wines of distinction. Today, young David Nieuwoudt carries on the pioneering family tradition, making innovative and award-winning wines. Click here to read more.

Terroir
At an altitude of more than 1000 m above sea level, Cederberg Private Cellar is South Africa’s highest winery. A cool continental climate, with snow in winter and northwesterly breezes in the hot summers, combined with several different soil types, unpolluted air and crystal clear waters, make this dramatic landscape the ideal terroir for a wide range of noble wines, most notably its prize reds. Our high-grown wines continue to win the highest accolades, from listings on international airlines to Veritas Double Gold awards. Click here to read more.

Accolades
Since David Nieuwoudt has taken over the wine-making responsibilities at Cederberg Private Cellar in 1997 he has won two Veritas double gold medals and six Veritas gold medals. The Vetitas awards are South Africa’s top recognition for fine wines. Other awards include a gold medal at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, a number of four-star ratings in South Africa’s top wine publications, and inclusion on all South African Airways' Business Class winelists. The Winemaker
Not surprisingly, our award-winning wines come from an award-winning winemaker. David Nieuwoudt is a graduate of the highly respected Elsenburg Agricultural College. He gained experience at various well-known estates before returning home to take over Cederberg Private Cellar which has since leapt into prominence on the South African wine scene.
