History
Nestled at the foot of the mountain after which it is named, Saronsberg wine estate is a contemporary addition to the rich heritage of Tulbagh valley. It was formed late in 2002 when Waveren and Welgegund - two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen - were purchased and combined to create a unique location for this progressive winery. Two months later a fire swept through the valley, destroying a portion of Saronsberg's vineyards and convincing all involved that initial plans to delay the construction of a cellar should be reconsidered. more »
Viticulture
Saronsberg farm is situated in the Tulbagh valley, Western Cape Province, 120 km north-east of Cape Town. Saronsberg mountain - at whose foot the farm lies - forms part of the Obiqua Mountains, one of the three mountain ranges that surround the valley in the shape of an inverted horseshoe. The climate is generally continental, with prevailing summer winds entering through the open southern side - the only access to the valley. more »
Our Cellar
Construction of Saronsberg's state-of-the-art cellar was completed at the beginning of 2004 - just in time for the start of the award-winning maiden vintage. more »
People
Most of the 15 families that live on the farm have worked the land since before it took the name 'Saronsberg'. 'Our winery would be nothing without its people,' says winemaker Dewaldt Heyns. 'Their contribution is invaluable. We are a small team, but together we bring a wealth of experience to the job. It is a privilege to work as a part of this group.' But Saronsberg management hopes to offer more than just employment, uplifting cellar staff through ongoing outside training and a bursary for promising youngsters. more »
Awards
We acknowledge that wine judging is not an exact process. The sheer number of variables that come into play when tasting the same wine across different competitions with different tasting panels in different parts of the world at different times of the year, ensure that an award sticker on the outside of a bottle is no guarantee of quality on the inside. We do, however, believe that awards and competitions have a role to play in indicating consistency of quality - across vintages of the same wine and a winery's portfolio as a whole. more »
