SA's leading Cabernet Sauvignon wines revealed
published on:
28 May 2012

The Christian Eedes Top Ten Cabernet Sauvignon
Christian Eedes, in partnership with Sanlam Private Investments (SPI), today revealed the results of his first annual Cabernet Sauvignon Report at an intimate event for media and industry representatives. Hosted at French Toast Tapas and Wine Bar in Bree Street, the top ten wines were revealed and guests given the opportunity to taste each one.
“Cabernet Sauvignon is a much-loved variety, and a category in which South Africa traditionally does well,” said Eedes, “it was therefore a natural choice for this report, placing more focus on the potential of this variety to produce wines that can compete with the world’s best. In addition, it is the second most widely planted variety in South Africa, making up 12% of the national vineyard at the end of 2011, yet is arguably overlooked relative to other wine styles.”
The winning wines were judged by an expert panel, chaired by Christian Eedes, with 60 carefully chosen Cabernet Sauvignon wines subjected to in-depth scrutiny of their strengths and weaknesses, and given a rating and detailed tasting note.
"The line-up was blind tasted according to the 20-point/ 5 Stars system. After the first round of judging, 14 wines were considered to have particular distinction and these went through to a second round where the panel could give them more detailed examination - out of this emerged the top 10,” Eedes explained.
Alwyn van der Merwe, director of Investments at SPI, and an associate judge in this report, said SPI was delighted to have partnered with Christian Eedes for this report and that, from an investors’ perspective, fine wine historically has served investors well and has high appeal. “As Master Wealthmakers we’re delighted to salute Master Winemakers,” said Van der Merwe. “Wine, with its long legacy of value, is part of the passion investment asset class worldwide and is likely to continue to grow in worth. The Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report is a reference that can assist potential investors to identify top quality South African wines,” concluded Van der Merwe.
The Christian Eedes Top Ten Cabernet Sauvignon wines for 2012 are:
Five stars
1. Delaire Reserve 2009
2. De Trafford 2009
3. Graham Beck The Coffeestone 209
4. Tokara 2009
Four and a half stars
5. Cederberg Five Generations 2009
6. Rickety Bridge Paulina’s Reserve 2009
7. Stark-Condé 2009
8. Stark-Condé Three Pines 2009
Four stars
9. Kleine Zalze Family Reserve 2007

Interested to know whether all SA's top Cab's were considered, because I miss a few serious Cab Kings from this list .... ??

LIST ALL

To have any worthwhile credibility all the entries should've been listed, as I too, see a whole lot missing here. Sadly too many "top of ...." awards starting to confuse consumers.
