Classic Wine's fourth issue is out, centred around the top Ports and Pinotages from its category tastings, as well as suggestions on pairing with venison, the top 10 suggested wineries with fireplaces to visit this winter, and advice on how to approach the purchase of imported wines, among other features.
Of the 51 Ports, evaluated in their style groupings, 30 Ports earned 3 Stars or more, an impressive hit rate of 59%, of which 14, just under half, came from Calitzdorp cellars. Boplaas had a particularly good showing in those 14, earning one 4½-Star, four 4-Stars and one 3-Star. De Krans also had a steady presence with a 4½-Star wine and three 3-½-Star wines. One point of interest here is that most of the Boplaas Ports now have a Western Cape origin, denoting wider grape or wine sourcing other than Calitzdorp.

Out of the Top Six Pinotages, Rijk’s Cellar had no less than three wines in the Top Six category, reinforcing its position as a top-quality winery following its Chenin Blanc in the Classic Wine Top 10 and its Bravado 2005 in the Top Six Red blends earlier this year. Rijk’s has also been awarded with the Trophy for the Best Pinotage at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show over the last two years. Meerendal, Cloof and Swartland were other wineries producing wines of note in the Top Six Pinotage category tasting.
