The Gallery presents "The French Connection" during Bastille

The Gallery at Grande Provence will be presenting an exhibition titled 'The French Connection' from 13 July until 28 July 2012.
The Gallery at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, Franschhoek, will present an exhibition titled ‘The French Connection’, from 13 July, the first day of the Bastille Festival, until 28 July 2012.

This exhibition is a collection of coloured Le Monde newspaper front covers depicting the extreme emotions felt by the French during the South African War of 1899 to 1902. Each of these hand painted front covers are works of art and should be viewed by as many art lovers and history buffs as possible.

As the war in South Africa progressed, so too did the rage felt and fuelled by French journalists and the French population. They were decidedly pro-Boer and anti-British. These newspapers will pay tribute to history and simultaneously our French ties.

The significant historical documentation was made available courtesy of well known author and educator Riette Hugo.

Franschhoek has the most tangible connection with France due to the first French speaking settlers who were granted land under the governorship of Simon van der Stel in the late 17th century. Although this seems a romantic gesture from where we stand three centuries down the line, he also banned the speaking of French and encouraged the use of Dutch so that the language gradually faded and there is merely this quaint little corner left with French names which still links us and pays tribute to these courageous people.
