Vintage Conditions
The 2010 harvest will be remembered for its erratic weather changes, which posed a challenge for winemakers and viticulturists alike. Budding occurred earlier than expected, which introduced an early start for the 2010 harvest. The mild growing season promoted slow ripening and maximized the development of berry flavours. Above average rainfall was recorded during this period, resulting in increased disease pressure and lower vineyard yields. Quality in general was very good, promising a range of excellent wines from KWV.

about the harvest: Harvest Date: Mid February to March 2010
Balling at Harvest: 25° - 26° Balling
Yield: 4 - 6t/ha

in the cellar : Blending a multi-varietal wine can be challenging as it requires time, patience and skill. As a result, blending is widely considered an art in itself. By perfecting this art the winemaker is able to create a wine that both rewards and reflects the effort that went into its production.

In our journey on this occasion to blend the perfect Pinotage-based wine to meet all the criteria for greatness - we used six varietals. This gentle wine has a soft tannin structure with upfront, multi-layed fruit and spice aromas. Sweet fruit flavours meet juicy tannins with immense concentration, resulting in a seamless palate. Made in a classic style, the wine showcases the best of Pinotage's vibrant fruit aromas together with its silky soft tannins that in dance with all the positive attributes, dimension and complexity that the other varietals add to blend.

With this unique Cape Blend - a first in the history of KWV - the winemaking team wishes to pay tribute to Prof. Abraham Perold by honouring the legacy he left not only at KWV, but throughout the South African wine industry.

Lets raise a glass to Pinotage!

Winemaking
Vinified from specially selected vineyards, this wine was crafted from only the best bunches and berries. Only the most promising wines of each varietal were chosen after fermentation, to mature further in barrels. Following 12 months of maturation, the best wines were selected to mature for further six months. This wine is truly about the best-of-the-best selection. The wine underwent 16 months of maturation in a combination of 90% French and 10% American oak barrels. A 70% portion of the barrels used were made of new oak.

Total Production: 2 840 bottles

Bottling Date: November 2011
