| The UK-based Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) wine courses are

and Associate of the Institute of Wines and Spirits, Cathy Marston,
will be offering Levels 1, 2 and 3, with the first round of courses
starting in March.

The WSET wine courses are the acknowledged benchmark in the wine industry, with educators teaching them in more than 55 different countries making them the most widely recognised wine courses in the world. Gaining a WSET qualification means that not only have you met some of the most demanding and rigorous criteria, independently and impartially administered from a single exam management system, you’ve also now got something in common with the vast majority of wine professionals anywhere in the world. And, of course, your knowledge of international wines is considerably increased, making buying, selling and talking wine with overseas customers and buyers far easier.
The first courses have been scheduled for Cape Town and Stellenbosch but more are in the pipeline for Gauteng and Durban, plus weekend courses will be on their way soon as well.
At the moment, there are no plans to offer Level 1 courses. If you would like a course organised just for your staff, please contact Cathy on winecourse@cathymarston.co.za.
Level 2 – Behind the Label
This course covers the major grape varieties and where they are grown around the world. Students are taught how to taste wine professionally using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting. This is a great course for any wine-lover, both those working in the wine industry and for enthusiastic amateurs. No previous wine experience necessary and you’ll taste approximately 40 wines during the course, the majority of them from overseas.

Level 3 – Exploring Wines and Spirits
This course provides a more comprehensive coverage of the wide range of wines and spirits around the world. The qualification has an increased focus on wine tasting technique and the course provides a core knowledge of the wide range of wines and spirits around the world to equip those in a supervisory capacity with the authority and confidence to make informed decisions in a wide variety of trade situations. It is essential that you have either WSET Level 2 or an equivalent level of knowledge in order to achieve success in this professional qualification. Please email with details of your experience and qualifications to find out more.
This qualification enables you to use the WSET logo on business cards, stationery etc. You’ll taste at least 80 wines, 95% of them from overseas and I am delighted to confirm that both Cathy van Zyl MW and Richard Kershaw MW will be lecturing on this course.
