The national winners receive certificates at the awards function and due to demand certificates can also be ordered for the winning wines in the different categories of the wine growing areas, together with the self-adhesive decals for bottle use that are available to both the national and category winners.
The top wine of each cultivar, top red and white blend, top sparkling wine, top rosé and top dessert wines are awarded in all the area categories and from those the national winners are chosen. The closing date for entries is 22 June 2012 and the awards function will be held on 26 July 2012.
In addition, the first ever Top 5 Estate Wines in South Africa will be announced and rewarded at the awards function. One of the producers of those Top 5 Estate Wines wil receive the second Novare Trophy for SA Terroir Top Wine Estate, based on the number of estate wines entered and how they were ranked.
South Africa has 176 units registered at the Wine and Spirit Board for the production of estate wines, of which the most are from Stellenbosch (57), Paarl (33), Robertson (19), Tulbagh (9), Walker Bay (8), Swartland (7), Breedekloof (7) and Franschhoek (7).
To produce an estate wine the unit for the production must be registered as an estate (it can include bordering farms), all grapes must come from the registered unit and the wine must be vinified and bottled on the registered unit. Only then can the word Estate be used on the label, to many the true wine symbol of terroir.
The Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards website, www.terroirwineawards.co.za, in March was nominated by CSS Design as one of the top designed websites of the month in the world. Websites deemed as outstanding by their judges are added to the Nominees Gallery and are in the running for a CSS Design Award. Thousands of websites are entered daily and only a few are nominated.
“Because the Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards is something special, we put an extra effort into the website to also make it exceptional on the same basis,” says Le Roux Steyn, Managing Director of Artificial Studio which designed the website.
SA Terroir Wine Awards was created to honour the wines which truly portray South Africa's different wine growing areas. Only wines certified as a Wine of Origin (WO) from a single vineyard, estate, ward or small district that is not divided into wards may be entered. The volume requirement is only 180 litres (20 twelve-bottle cases). The strict WO application makes it the most exclusive wine competition in the world.
The seven judges this year are qualified experts who are regularly exposed to the wines from all our districts, namely Andrea Freeborough, Dave Hughes, David Biggs, Pierre Marais, Marilyn Cooper, Irina von Holdt and Guy Webber.
Besides the National Winners, the Top 5 Estate wines and the second Novare Trophy for SA Terroir Top Wine Estate that will end up on stage, the third Novare Trophy for SA Terroir Top Wine Area will also be awarded.
The Wine and Spirits Board supports the competition and will verify the legitimacy of all the entries.
