| Wellington's third 'Quest for the Best' |
| 25 July 2012 by Wellington Wine Route |

| The SA Terroir Top Wine Area 2010 is well on the way towards their third Quest for the Best - the internal wine competition for Wellington by Wellington with the overall vision to improve the standard of Wellington wines from within. This year Christine Rudman is at the helm taking over from Dave Hughes who was the convenor in previous years.

The competition consists of two tiers. On 2 August all the winemakers of the area are invited to taste the wines entered. All wines scored 16 and higher out of 20, get forwarded to the panel who taste on the second day. The other members of the panel are Christian Eedes, Bennie Howard, Mike Duggen and Jaco Potgieter of Douglas Green. The judging will be followed by a prize-giving and finger lunch at the DGB VIP room.
At the QftB 2011 the overall top wine which was awarded the Mutual and Federal Floating Trophy went to Leon Bester of Napier Winery for the 2008 St Catherine Single Vineyard Chardonnay. The panel also urged Wellington producers to focus on chenin and shiraz (two cultivars which excel in Wellington climate and soil).
It is also pertinent that Wellington celebrates it independence as a District during this competition. Since its inception in 1992, Wellington Wine Route has been demarcated as a ward of Paarl and Wellington wines had to bear the inscription WO Paarl. Finally after almost two years of struggle to redraw the borders of Wellington District, it was approved and announced in March 2012. In September this year Wellington will be pulling out all the stops with a the launch to celebrate this important event in wine history.
