Wine in the Bible.

Five fascinating facts about wine in the Bible
19 October 2012  by Jessica Yadegaran, Contra Costa Times
It is difficult to grasp that one wild grape vine, vinis vinifera, evolved over millions of years into what are now some 10,000 grape varietals, including the California chardonnay or Argentine Malbec that you're enjoying right ... this ... minute.
The grape's story is central to the Bible and some of the details of its ancient beginnings will baffle you, including these five fascinating facts from "Divine Vintage: Following the Wine Trail from Genesis to the Modern Age" (Palgrave; $26) by Randall Haskett and Joel Butler. The book comes out Nov. 13.

  1. In 2011 the earliest winemaking facility was discovered in southern Armenia. An excavation at the 6,000-year-old site revealed a fermenting vat, the remains of a drinking cup made from animal horn, storage jars, dried grapes, seeds, and the presence of malvidin,... read on

Too funny. Laughing to myself about how some of you all will be in a conundrum after reading this... it's about the bible, but also talks about grapes "evolving over millions of years". But the world's only 6,000 years old and people used to ride dinosaurs yadda yadda.

Some of us won't be in a conundrum at all, Myth Buster. Some of us realize that it's utter folly to use Hebrew poetry, written millennia ago for an ancient civilization ("meeting" them in their culture and context), as a scientific textbook in the 21st century. Even if we would do such a silly thing, we know that the creation of the earth could have taken millions of years, seeing as - to God - one day is the same as a thousand years (symbolic numbers, again). Besides, in Genesis, the word "Yom" that is translated in most Bibles to "day", can in fact mean just about any period of time (http://www.oldearth.org/word_study_yom.htm).
There have been countless brilliant scientists (and also many, many average next-door Christians) over many, many years that have believed both in God and that He has created the earth much, much longer than 6000 years ago.
What is inaccurate, is the author's belief that Dom Perignon created sparkling wine.

Ja, nice and all, but the article doesn't say Dom Perignon "created sparkling wine" dude / dudess. It merely said "..... before Dom Perignon in Champagne.....", doesn't imply "created". Otherwise reasonable comment.
Just amused at how quick people are to point out errors, etc., and also how when scientists date geography and later find they were wrong, are quick to say that"... at the time the technology...... etc, etc. Who cares a hoot?? Just live life damnit!! Oh, and have some wine while living it...... :-)

Hi, Barry
Picking bones here, but the article actually does say "created". Here's the exact quote: "According to the authors' translations, it is possible that the Israelites, long before Dom Perignon in Champagne, created sparkling wine,.."
To me it's a clear insinuation that - to the writer's mind - Dom P created sparkling wine (to possibly be refuted by this new-found info).
I'll agree to disagree with you on this one then, Barry.
Cheers
