Leading port producer, Boets Nel who co-owns De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp and is General Manager at Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, was recently inducted as a commandeur to the Commanderie de Bordeaux en Afrique du Sud. The ceremony took place at Lanzerac Wine Estate on 14 August.

The Commanderie de Bordeaux, the senior institution amongst the 15 wine fraternities of Bordeaux, is by and large the commercial equivalent of an embassy for Bordeaux wines. Relevant to South Africa the Commanderie represents a platform and agent for wine education in its broadest sense, instilling the sensible use of wine in the cultural fabric of society, promoting moderate and responsible social use of wine, identifying with and enhancing wine traditions, and lobbying support for the local wine industry.

Boets is highly regarded in the port and wine industry, and together with his brother, Stroebel, oversees the successful running of De Krans, which has been in their family since 1890. The ports produced range from the traditional to modern, catering for all palates throughout the year. The wine cellar has won numerous awards, both locally and internationally since 1980, and include Champion Private Wine Cellar in the Klein Karoo region, 4 and 5 star ratings in the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter's South African Wine Guide to name but a few.

De Krans has also established a name for itself internationally for its award-winning ports, as well as interesting red wines made from unusual grape varieties such as Touriga Naçional and Tempranillo. Their line up also includes an impressive range of excellent value wines made from classic grape varieties.

Boets has also been involved with Lanzerac Wine Estate as the General Manager, wine division, since July 2012. Boets’ expert knowledge of running a wine farm, and his expertise in the wine industry has proved invaluable in the resurgence of the Lanzerac brand.
