Nederburg Wines
Nederburg is sharing its passion for special tastes and has decided as a rare treat to unlock the inner-most section of its wine cellar for just a short window, so wine lovers get to experience some of its choicest Private Bin vintage connoisseur wines. These are limited editions made for exclusive sale at the Nederburg Auction.
The extraordinary offer comes ahead of the 40th anniversary of what has become one of the world's foremost wine auctions. It takes place on September 12 and 13.

Members of the public will be able to sample just four of the prized wines as part of a special gourmet menu offered at The Red Table at Nederburg. The restaurant is the project of well-known Cape Town foodie Andrea Foulkes of Dish Food & Social.

"So often we are approached by wine lovers, keen to taste our specialty auction wines and because stocks are so limited, we haven't been able to say yes," explains Melissa Diedericks, Nederburg's brand manager for South Africa. "But with such a significant anniversary, we thought we should make an exception and offer a real treat.

“Our auction wines only come under the hammer once a year, so we suggest you taste them whenever the opportunity presents itself,” she concludes.

The two whites and two reds have each been paired with classic dishes given a unique South African expression for which The Red Table is developing a loyal following. Says chef Wilmien Smuts: "This is a very exciting opportunity for me. It isn't often that we are able to work with Private Bin vintages. These are wines of such rarity and calibre!"

The polished, perfumed, 2008 D212 Viognier will be showcased with the opening course, a creamy mussel chowder served with a sweet corn stick bread. To highlight the berry, mocha notes of the 2004 R191 Merlot, the wine is paired with a duck leg confit prepared with four red fruits and served with sweet potato.

The oldest of the four wines, the 2001 R109 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, made by Razvan Macici during his maiden vintage with Nederburg, is matched with springbok denningvleis to echo its ripe red fruit and savoury notes.

The final course, a quince Bavarois crème topped with a rooibos-infused broth, comes with a glass of the nectar-like 2003 Noble Late Harvest Weisser Riesling.

The lunch offer, which runs from August 1 to September 15, is available at R320 per person, including wines, and is applicable to groups of 10 people or more. It has to be pre-booked, with evening bookings by special arrangement.

As an added extra, a representative from the winemaking team will host each of the following special meal services:

Saturday, August 16: evening
Sunday, August 17: lunch
Friday, August 22: evening
Saturday, August 23: evening
Saturday, August 30: evening
Sunday, September 7: lunch
