De Krans
De Krans’ winning vintage port is
produced from Touriga Nacional grapes and will undergo further barrel
maturation before it is bottled early in 2016. ‘2014 was a challenging year
with lots of rain in the summer,’ comments De Krans winemaker Louis van der
Riet. Slow ripening allowed for beautiful aromas of violets and chocolate with
a firm tannin structure, which will result in a port with excellent ageing
potential.
This is the second time in three
years that De Krans has been named at the SA Champion Port, after being awarded
this title in 2012 as well. The De Krans Tawny Port and Vintage Port were named
Class Winners, respectively, at the same event.
This latest achievement follows hot
on the heels of the award for Best Cape Port at the 2014 Old Mutual Trophy Wine
Show, awarded to the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2011 in June this year.
Earlier this month the same port was named the Best Port in South Africa at the
2014 SA Terroir Wine Competition.
