With so much emphasis on meat, the life of a vegetarian or Pescetarian can be a difficult one but not all hope is lost, here are 5 different locations in the beautiul Franschhoek valley that offers the vegetarian some delicious meat-free grub:

Green House - Babylonstoren

It is literally a greenhouse and therefore one would expect fresh and seasonal dishes and you won't be disappointed. Simple, casual dining is key as they let the beautiful landscape and their home-grown produce speak for itself.

The menu consists mainly of make-your-own sandwiches from a selection of their fresh farm ingredients - the perfect accompaniment to a leisurely stroll around the gardens.

Rupert & Rothschild

Having re-vamped their tasting room last year, R&R is an absolute stunner of a winery. Natural, soft finishes showcase their effortlessly graceful wines and their new restaurant offers wine and food pairings that match each other beautifully. Whilst there isn't a separate vegetarian option, Chef Carmen Muller welcomes bookings in advance so that she can work out a pairing

The elegance of the restaurant, which is not separate from the tasting room, is only superseded by the genuine friendliness and expertise of the staff.

Terra Del Capo - Anthonji Rupert

Intimate but lavishly decorated, Terra Del Capo Antipasti is separated by glass from their bottling lines which means whilst you indulge in delicious mini morsels, you can watch as your favourite Anthonji Rupert wines are prepared for the market.

The menu itself is split into Antipasti cold, Antispasti Hot and platters for sharing. One dish that I could eat again and again is their beer-battered zucchini fries served with fresh aioli and not forgetting their amazing ice cream offerings; nutella, double chocolate, rooibos and at only R8 for a large scoop.

Ryan's Kitchen

Small meals might not sound as though they are going to fill you up but Chef Ryan is known for his exquisite flavours and the idea behind his small plate philosophy is so that you and a partner can order lots from the menu and share...but you don't have to.

The merge of flavours - African, Eastern - are perfectly balanced and in each dish there is a beautiful symphony of salt, sweet and acidity. Each element in each dish is designed to complement and enhance the other into a glorious crescendo of flavour that lingers on way after you've left the establishment.

Fyndraai Restaurant - Solms Delta

Authentic, South African flavours are what you will find at Fyndraai. Cape Cuisine never tasted so good which is probably why Solms Delta remains a top-visited location on many tour guide’s itineraries.

Dishes explore the diverse culinary heritage of the Cape, uniting European, Asian and African flavours in a fusion of tradition and creativity. Dishes include suped up versions of Roosterkoek, Tamatie Bredie and Bobotie - it's a brilliant place to come to if you like your traditions modernized.
