Boplaas
Over the last 10 years Boplaas
excelled with their Cape Portuguese red wines. And small wonder: winemaker Margaux
Nel specialisation – during her Master's degree in viticulture – was in the use
of Touriga Nacional in the production of red table wines and Cape Port.
Wines from Boplaas that deserve
special mention is the Boplaas Touriga
Nacional Family Reserve 2012. The
beautiful deep coloured red wine with flavours of violets, blackberries and
rich ripe tannins was included in the list of SA Top 100 wines, awarded a gold
medal at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards and also secured a place as
one of South Africa's Top 10 Red Table Wines at the Cape Port & Wine
Challenge for 2015.
The Boplaas Gamka Cape Portuguese Red Blend 2012, the flagship red wine
from Boplaas (a blend of Touriga Nacional and Shiraz) received a double gold medal
at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, is also one of SA's Top 100
Wines and earned a highly respectable 16,5 points from wine critic and Master
of Wine, Jancis Robinson.
The Boplaas Gamka 2013 received
91 points from wine critic, Master of Wine, Tim Atkins.
Carel Nel is the only person from
the southern Cape that holds a seat in the highly respected Cape Winemakers
Guild (CWG). This year, Boplaas' entry for the annual CWG auction – Daniel’s Legacy Cape Portuguese Red Blend
2013 – once again showcased the winemaking excellence inherent to this
cellar. The wine was rated 93 points by Wine Spectator and 93 points by Michael
Chan and was sold for a record price of R5000/ 6 bottles case!
The Boplaas Tinta Barocca is the top
selling red wine from Boplaas and was in the Top 10 Red Wines at the Cape Port
& Wine Challenge for the last three years.
The 2011 Boplaas Tinta Barocca
received a gold medal at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards and is one
of the wines from the Boplaas collection listed at Woolworths, along with the Boplaas Portuguese Connection (a blend
of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Cabernet Sauvignon).
