Nederburg again demonstrated its strength with Cabernet Sauvignon and dessert wines at this year's International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London, winning a gold outstanding and four gold medals.

The competition's highest medal honour, gold outstanding, was conferred upon the 2013 vintage of Nederburg’s Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines have to score at least 93 on a 100-point scale to earn this distinction, and are classified as “quality of the highest order”.

The gold medals were awarded to Nederburg Private Bin Eminence 2012 and 2007, as well as Nederburg Edelkeur 2009 and 2005.
These limited-edition specialty wines are all made for exclusive sale on the annual Nederburg Auction. One of these, the 2009 vintage of Edelkeur, made by previous Nederburg cellar-master Razvan Macici, will be offered for purchase at the 2016 edition of this showcase of the best of the best of South African wines.

Only nine gold outstanding and 30 gold medals were awarded to South African wines by the IWSC judges. They made particular reference in how high the standard was for this year’s set of South African wines submitted.

Meanwhile, seven Nederburg wines were scored 90 points or more by well-known British wine commentator Tim Atkin MW in his authoritative 2016 South Africa Special Report.

Atkin's top scores for Nederburg wines had been from across the range and pricing spectrum, from the hand-made, small-editions to those sold more widely.

Nederburg's highest scoring wine was the Winemaster's Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2014, with a rating of 95. This wine also features on Atkin’s list of South Africa’s best sweet wines this year.

Three of the five wines in the individually named Heritage Heroes collection earned 90 or more. The Young Airhawk 2014, a wooded Sauvignon blanc, came in at 92; while the 2014 Rhône-style red blend, The Motorcycle Marvel; and The Anchorman 2015, a wooded Chenin blanc, both achieved 90.

The Ingenuity White 2015, an eight-way blend led by Sauvignon blanc was rated 91, and the II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, made from individually selected vines, scored 90.

The 2012 vintage of Private Bin Eminence earned 90 points. The same wine featured as one of the top ten wines at the 2016 Muscats du Monde in France earlier this year, also earning a gold medal. And it won trophies at the 2016 International Wine Challenge (IWC) in the United Kingdom, and the 2016 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show in South Africa.

In his fourth annual guide to South Africa, Atkin stated that “a winning combination of better viticulture, the development of new wine regions and the emergence of a young generation of wine-making talent make South Africa the most dynamic wine-producing country in the world right now.”
Atkin will deliver the keynote speech at the 2016 Nederburg Auction, now in its 42nd year, taking place at Nederburg in Paarl on 16 and 17 September.
