The South African Wine and Spirit Board recently took an innovative decision when it approved a new Wine of Origin District named after Cape Town, which will see 30 of South Africa’s leading wineries join forces under one inclusive and globally recognised name.

According to Martin Moore, Cellar Master at Durbanville Hills winery, this development is set to boost wine tourism in the region and positively impact the local tourism industry by elevating Cape Town’s status as a wine destination to the level of better-known wine regions in the Western Cape, such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

“Although Cape Town has long been a popular destination among international tourists, grouping the wineries under this inclusive name is sure to promote the local industry even further and attract greater tourist attention, building and cementing Cape Town’s reputation as an exceptional wine producing region.”

This development also signifies a great effort of unity from various wards and wineries, says Moore. “The formation of this new wine district indicates a newfound synergy within the South African wine industry and will no doubt increase global awareness of the region.

He says that he is thrilled to be a part of such an exciting development in the local wine industry. “By way of the City of Cape Town being such a strong brand, the all-encompassing name ‘Wine of Origin Cape Town’ is expected to elevate the general profile of South African wine. As Durbanville Hills is known as the place where city culture and viticulture connect, the new name serves to amplify our association to the magnificent mother city.”
