Allesverloren Wine Estate is one of the oldest in the Swartland Wine Appellation. Well known for what was formerly referred to as Port – it was the go to Port style wine in South Africa. The Estate is well known too for its red wines, some made from Portuguese Port varieties. Now in spring it offers its classic Allesverloren Tinta Rosé 2017.

The grapes used to make the Allesverloren Tinta Rosé 2017 come from the north-eastern slopes of the majestic Kasteelberg. Dry land trellised vineyards planted in rough mountain soils face both the north west and the south east. Hand harvested the grapes were brought to the cellar where they destalked and the juice left on the skins to take up the rose cherry blossom colour. It is then made the same way as a crisp fresh white wine by owner Danie Malan, his winemaker Wilhelm de Vries.

Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle under a silver screw cap. The label is whistful and elegant. In the glass, it is a dusty pink in colour with fresh whiffs of red berry fruit and watermelon. Crisp and fresh on the palate with an undertow of vanilla. Harmonious acid, fruit, and residual sugar balance extending into a long satisfying aftertaste.

Pair
I had my first bowl of Duck Ramen over the weekend and this wine was the most perfect match. It goes well with smoked fish like salmon, trout, angelfish and snoek. Happy with a variety of oriental dishes and also a mild vegetarian curry from India’s southern province Kerala.
