The Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2014 was recently awarded a coveted Gold Award at the 2017 International Wine & Spirits Competition. The Fleur du Cap winemaking team, at Die Bergkelder in Stellenbosch, are extremely pleased with these results. “This wine is yet another example of our team's dedication to crafting wines that will make our loyal customers' wine drinking experiences, just that little more special,” says Fleur du Cap red winemaker, Pieter Badenhorst.
Attributing to this, Die Bergkelder’s expert winemaking team has the freedom to be meticulous in their sourcing only selecting grapes from the most renowned winegrowing regions of the Cape. They aren't bound by a specific farm, site, vineyards or climate.
In its 48th year, the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s aim is to reward quality wines and spirits across the world and to encourage recognition for excellent products. Entries for the competition are received from all over the world, nearly 90 countries, and each sample is judged according to its class. The competition standard remains commendable, with over 400 global experts judging products for a duration of 7 months of the year at dedicated wine tasting premises.
The Unfiltered Merlot 2014 has a deep ruby colour with a bright hue. On the nose it shows multiple layers of dark fruit such as plum and blackcurrant with a hint of oak spices. The palate is plush, rich and velvety with well-balanced fruit and supple tannins that shows great ageing potential. This Merlot is the ideal accompaniment to fillet of beef and roast lamb but goes equally well with rich, robust dishes and strong flavoured cheeses.
