Alleseverloren Wine Estate
Here Danie Malan the owner winemaker, like his father Fanie before him, both early pioneers of the Swartland Wine Appellation, makes the finest of red wines, and an iconic Port style wine, one of the best and most everlasting of the local ports. Using traditional Portuguese Port varieties, Danie has a range of dry red wines, the Allesverloren Tinta Barocca 2015. The Estate also recently released an excellent Chenin Blanc.
Allesverloren Wine Estate, which has been making wine since the early 19th century was acquired by the Malan family in 1872 and Danie is the fifth-generation winemaker.
Picked from trellised dry-land farmed vineyards, some as old as 1958 plantings, the Allesverloren Tinta Barocca 2015 goes through tradition elévage in the cellar. The oak maturation, after malolactic fermentation has taken place, lasts for 8 months in a mix of new, second and third fill French oak barrels before being prepared for bottling.
Pour
From a Burgundy shaped bottle under natural cork. Traditional Allesverloren livery. In the glass, it is a deep bloodplum red at the core which pales out to a translucent ruby at the edges. The nose is of ripe red berries with an undertow of vanilla and oak spices, whiff of chocolate. The entry is of an elegant wine, lusty and well bodied. Again, the generosity of red roadside berries like brambles and mulberries show well. The ending has excellent interwoven tannins and cacoa.
Pair
Without doubt a red meat wine. Perhaps something Portuguese like a Beef Espetada, or the iconic Arroz de Tomate, a form of risotto. Go local and serve it with a Tomato Bredie.
