Stellenzicht, renowned for award winning Shiraz, has outclassed all other South African producers with a top 10 ranking at the inaugural international 2007 Syrah du Monde Awards with its flagship Syrah 2001. The acclaimed Stellenzicht Syrah 2001 was awarded a gold medal and was the only South African wine to be included in the top 10.
This jewel in Stellenzicht’s prestigious range of speciality wines was made from a single vineyard in the unique 'Golden Triangle' an area on the verdant slopes of the Helderberg Mountains known for its blockbuster reds and some of the country’s most celebrated wines.

Made in the classic northern Rhône style by Cellarmaster Guy Webber, the Stellenzicht Syrah 2001 was matured predominantly in French oak. The 20 year old vineyard known affectionately as 'Plum Pudding Hill', produces excellent grapes vintage after vintage resulting in fine wines with a strong sense of place that can hold their own with the best in the world. This full-bodied yet succulent wine with firm, soft tannins and perfectly balanced acidity, abounds with ripe plums, mocha and dark chocolate on the nose with hints of cinnamon and cloves.

This is not the first time that the Stellenzicht Syrah 2001 was rated internationally as a top South African Shiraz. At the 2004 International Wine Challenge in London, it won the Trophy as best South African Shiraz. The wine also performed well in local competitions with a gold medal at Veritas in 2003 and at the 2006 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Expert international judges at the Syrah du Monde 2007 identified the Stellenzicht Syrah as a wine of distinctive quality out of 325 prized Syrah/Shiraz wines from 17 countries. The wines were judged over the course of two days to find the 10 best in the world.

Organised by Forum Oenologie in France, this was the first time that the Syrah du Monde Awards recognised the world’s best Syrah/Shiraz wines. Shiraz has enjoyed impressive growth world-wide, and the judges looked particularly at diversity and quality in selecting the winning wines.

Besides its excellent location which is considered one of the best grape growing regions in the country, the single-minded endeavour to achieve balance in the vineyard and in the cellar, is what drives the Stellenzicht winemaking team to create their outstanding wines. Balance to ensure the vine has enough water to ripen its berries without diluting them, and balance in the processes of fermentation and maturation of the wine.

The Stellenzicht Syrah 2001 is available at around R160.00 at the cellar and from leading wine outlets.

Stellenzicht is open for winetasting and sales from 09h00 – 17h00 on weekdays and on Saturdays from November until March. For more information call (021) 880-1103 or visit www.stellenzicht.co.za.
