Stellenbosch Wine Festival ready to talk 'rubbish'
10 July 2009  by GC Communications
The Stellenbosch Wine Festival, which takes place from 30 July to 2 August at the Paul Roos Centre, will be implementing a recycling project once again this year with the assistance of 'Let's Talk Rubbish' to ensure that waste from the festival will be disposed of in a responsible manner.
Not only will recycling bins be available around every corner but festival goers can also expect to see bio-degradable plates and cutlery at the gourmet lane. With regards to bins, waste will be sorted in three different categories namely dry waste, wet waste and inorganic, un-recyclable waste. Dry waste includes products such as empty bottles, cans, cardboard rolls, chips packets and polystyrene, while wet waste consists of all food, cooked and raw, leftovers, soiled paper and food packaging. Inorganic waste comprises rubbish that cannot be recycled such as foam, light bulbs or chemical pesticides.

According to 'Let's Talk Rubbish', recycling is not the first step in the process of solid waste management. Communities should rather place their focus on three principles: Reduce, Re-use and only then, Recycle. Reduce the amount of inorganic, un-recyclable material by consciously choosing a product with packaging that can be recycled.

This will force manufacturers to make use of organic material. Re-use items such as ice-cream or yogurt containers as the process of recycling is a costly one. Be creative with containers and only once you can no longer make use of them, recycle the item. Recycling should therefore be the last step in the process.

In addition to responsible waste management, the Stellenbosch Festival has also implemented a responsible alcohol consumption policy. To avoid drinking and driving, festival goers can make use of the shuttle service available from Paarl, Franschhoek, Somerset West, the V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk and Tygervalley Shopping Centre for the duration of the festival. For more information, contact Stellenbosch Wine Routes (021) 886-4310.

With more than 500 wines and gourmet treats, wine lovers can expect a real wine bonanza at the 8th annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival. Festival goers are in for a real treat with highlights such as the Cape Wine Academy Tasting Theatre, the Clover Demonstration Kitchen, the sought-after Wine Connoisseurs evening and a Gourmet Lane. The Stellenbosch Wine Festival has become a much loved tradition during the winter months in Stellenbosch and is a popular destination for both local and international visitors.

Tickets for the Stellenbosch Wine Festival are available from Computicket, ranging from R100 per person, to R300 for the Golden Pass. For more information contact the Stellenbosch Wine Festival on (021) 886-4310 or visit www.wineroute.co.za.
